Tuladan L. Masandil Elementary School is one of the most remote schools in the Philippines, located in Sitio Ilak, Barangay Kuya, South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur, within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Philippines. It serves almost 200 students from the Teduray indigenous community, providing education in a remote and underserved area. Melbert Castillon, a volunteer teacher, who has been teaching for 14 years shares how the READ Program has reached even their remote community despite challenges like floods, muddy classrooms, and lack of electricity. “The number of non-readers has been significantly reduced thanks to Gawad Kalinga’s support," the teacher said. “We are closely guiding the students before they leave our school, so that when they reach high school, they will no longer struggle . From the bottom of our hearts, we thank all the donors, GK and GK USA. Despite the distance, your help was able to reach us. Fiyo Bagi! Thank you, GK USA!”

At Upper Idtig Elementary School in Paglat, last year’s efforts identified 104 students struggling to read. Today, with the support of Gawad Kalinga and Synchrony Foundation, that number has been reduced to 40. This proves that focused care can change the course of a child’s story.

Rowena Kamarudin, the school Principal, shared, “READ opened our eyes to the urgency of focusing on non-readers, a challenge many programs overlook. Thanks to GK’s encouragement, we were able to implement this program successfully.”
